Fritz Hart was one of Holst’s closest friends and fellow composition students at the RCM (and the librettist for Holst’s first opera, The Revoke). Hart provided the poem for this choral setting. Because it is so early, it was relegated to the “Youthful Works” appendix of Imogen Holst’s thematic catalog.
