The Autumn Is Old (1895)

The Autumn Is Old
H. 1
Composed 1895
Instrumentation

SATB Chorus (unaccompanied)

For a Holst cataloger, this piece is historically significant because Imogen Holst listed it as H. 1 making it technically the very first entry in his mature thematic catalog . Holst’s composition teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, had him writing vast amounts of unaccompanied choral music to teach him the basics of vocal counterpoint, and this piece was an unpublished, early result of those rigorous lessons.
